Open Room was conceived as a social sculpture by artist team Rosario Marquardt and Roberto Behar for the Sand Beach Park in the downtown Seaholm District of Austin, Texas. It was designed as a place of encounters and a stage for everyday life and stories to unfold. This installation features a 24-foot-long table with a “delicate” lace tablecloth, benches, and lighting structures, all made of powder-coated aluminum, inside an al fresco “room” surrounded by trees. This community gathering space has become a staple in Austin as a place to meet with friends for an impromptu picnic or join the table and make new friends.
