People’s Bridge of the Sun, David Ocelotl Garcia, 2022
SERVICES PROVIDED: Selection panel coordination, Design coordination, Budget management, Project management, Engineering coordination and oversight.
In partnership with the City and County of Denver, we coordinated the artist selection process for the NWC Bridges Public Art project. David Ocelotl Garcia, a local artist born and raised in Denver, Colorado, was selected to create public art for the two bridges that will connect the 250-acre NWC Campus with the surrounding neighborhoods. These projects are the long-term culmination of Public Art Services’ work over the span of three years to develop the Public Art Master Plan for this site.
In 2022, People’s Bridge of the Sun was installed along the bridge at 51st Ave that connects the surrounding community to the National Western Center Campus in Denver.
“This art installation is an immersive public space where the viewer can experience history, color, nature, texture and design with the use of materials like ceramic, bronze, cement, and glass. Signature elements were created with the help of hundreds of children and adults from the Globeville and Elyria Swansea community as well as dozens of art fabricators and designers from across the nation. This artwork is a visual manifestation of tribal philosophy, and nature-inspired design, intended to engage the public, while also honoring the history of the community and the First Nations of this land. This revolutionary public art space bridges the past, present, and future in honor of all living things and as an eternal visual representation of human kindness.”
